JZK, for your comments and support.

It is often the mechanics of a religious life that muslims fall down on, rather than what people say they believe. many of these girls with their boyfriends etc.. would happily embrace an Islamic lifestyle if that was presented to them. but often the option is between their own dysfunctional family life that is already detestable or a lassie-fare western culture that will be corrosive in the long term.

Sheikh Riyad Nadawi, says, that no one consciously chooses kuffr, they just seem to sink, or slide into it.

I think it is more the fear of their daughters being married than anything else! You should have heard some of the things family and other people said to try and persuade my Lebanese-Australian wife not to marry me (a British convert). I have heard it with friends too, the parents/family are worried about the girls "din", yet none of the men in the household pray, generally don't fast and some drink alcohol etc. Yet a convert who has chosen to pray and fast is rejected for such an inane reason.

If that doesn't work, they bring out the horror stories about the convert who had a cross inserted inside his chest next to his heart, and so on. :P

It is amazing how the judicial system has the ability to transform even the most wayward Muslim into an austere fundamentlist dutifully following the strictures of their faith.

That was an amazing post... I don't have much else to say about the issue that hasn't been articulated above. The part about the religiosity of the parents/family and its affect on the children is a huge issue that I feel has an important correlation. I see it all the time around me, and wonder why the parents expect their children to grow up differently, when they are given no chance of religious instruction or education.
