[...] Amir posted some thoughts about the violent reaction of some Muslims to the Pope’s comments. He also posted something that I initially wondered myself: Of course, to be fair, one can only imagine what those angry Muslims thought the Pope said because at the time that they started protesting, I understand that the speech had not yet been translated into English, Farsi, Arabic or Urdu.
Abu Eesa has some interesting comments on this latest fiasco.

But back to the anger from Muslims due to the Pope's speech. I think the 'shock' witnessed at his comments from Muslims in the West is a tad naive, and a direct result of the false lull of security and 'peace' we have got used to through the plethora of "inter-faith" events that we have here in the UK and US.

Although these may be intrinsically good things to have and communities do need something to ensure happy smiles all around and we especially need the support of well-established faith groups to ensure increased rights and protection for the Muslim community, indeed I'm involved in one this coming Wednesday (Lloyds Hotel, Chorlton, 7pm), but the danger is that it just becomes a night of self-praise, adulation, pat each others backs, lovey-dovey speech and see you guys next year. Take care, bye!

Motives for his speech become clearer when one understands the extraordinary numbers of Catholics who become Muslim

link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/21/AR2006092101975.html

It is entirely understandable that Benedict should come out swinging. Indeed it would be Negligent (from his perspective) not to do so. (It is less a case of coke v pepsi, and more like Microsoft v Linux).

If Benedict wishes Muslims to behave in a less violent and more intellectual fashion in refuting him, then I wholeheartedly agree, but it will be an immense loss of strategic advantage to him and his cause, if we do so.

The other link that is very useful is this essay written by Sheikh Timothy Winter at Cambridge, that seeks to understand the Benedict papacy (written before Rocky Balboa came out swinging)

before we get into an orgy of navel gazing and "how bad are we", lets realise that Benedict's speech was calculated to get this reaction from Muslims. Such a foundation speech such as this passes through many hands before it is delivered. I think that Benedict hoped to elicit a violent reaction from Muslims. The reaction itself was not the problem as much as once again we lost control of our message, and played into the hands of people who oppose us.

I don't think Sheikh Jafar Idris will need to exert himself in this refutation, most primary school aged Muslim children can see through the simple errors and faulty logic of the speech itself. I was astonished (after reading it) that Benedict went down the road of attacking reason and faith as a catholic hoping to critique Islamic theology. The equivalent sporting analogy is sending in Daryl Culanin against Shane Warne. Islam is all over Christianity when it comes to faith and reason. The heart of the revolution of rationalism is the scientific method, created by believing Muslim scholars in Baghdad's "house of wisdom".

Reason is not something that we have had a problematic relationship with over the last thousand years. (unlike the Catholic church). It would be unfortunate if we had to dredge up the comical Blackadder-like details of the council of Nicea, or issues of a flat earth, or the sun revolving around the sun etc..

Benedict, we own your arse on this one.

Why is it that Muslims surpass members of other faiths in their violent reactions?

Cartoons get published about Mohammed peace be upon him, and Muslims go around burning buildings down.

The pope quotes an emperors thought on Mohammed, we jump up and down and start making a fool of ourselves.

But we allow ourselves to criticise the Christian and Jewish faith to bits.

Its about time that we accept that Non Muslims have as much right to criticise our religion as we do to theirs.

Shall we think of getting civilised and becoming more Islamic? I am sure Mohammed peace be upon him would not be happy with our reaction.
