Sister Silma makes some pretty good points.

P.S. She started up An-Noor? Isn't that now apart of AIA (Australian International Academy)? They have a campus in Sydney with a similar name.

I really, really, really dislike this fetish for "community representatives". They're not representative unless they're chosen by an unbiased statistical method or elected by their constituency.

I've been at a number of so-called community panels and in no case did the "representatives" have any genuine input. They turned up, saw a presentation, were asked their views, and that was the end of it. Really, how could you expect anything else? The participants are inevitably strangers to the process and they haven't been privy to the lobbying and preparation that precedes these meetings. If these panels had any genuine power then the positions would be fought over by political operatives. The fact that they are (mostly) ignored means that they're not worth fighting for.

Silma is a giant in the Muslim community ,and easily a leader in her own right.

I never fail to be impressed by what I read about her or when I hear her speak.

If one wants an example of the huge gap between her and other public Muslims, one only has to see the Geoffrey Robertson Hypothetical he did for channel 9.

True that - the hijab issue aside, I am sure that there are plenty of people who could represent us (with or without scarf). Perhaps we simply need more than one young person to represent the various realities on the ground in the first place?
