Plato’s Cave, Nazi Race Science, and Carbon-14

Televised ‘panel discussions’ on Islamic and Muslim issues have provided us with plenty of cringe-worthy material over the last few years but nothing — nothing — I have seen recently compares to this. After screening the Great Global Warming Swindle, the ABC (Australia’s public broadcaster) held a panel discussion on the question of whether global warming is anthropogenic. After the discussion, they go to the audience for questions and, as they say, hilarity ensues.

Video over the fold.

The first person talking about carbon-14 found in “copious measurable amounts” in coal is, most probably, a creationist. The others asking strange questions about eugenics, Plato’s cave, Prince Phillip, happy dancing, Johannes Kepler and the Nazis appear to be followers of Lyndon Larouche.

That was hilarious. The expression on the faces of the scientists was gold.

I think our community could use some of them as spokesmen.

especially the first one who was waving his arms, and the grim faced woman whose pet rat had died

It just makes you realise how crackers the denialists are.

I cannot believe such crackers are taken seriously.

Well, audience idiots aside, I think the linked documentary raises some very interesting questions. The whole global warming issue is something that I haven’t thought too much about personally, but in hindsight I do find much of the claims of radical environmentalists, along with their high priest Al Gore, to be very dubious. I have read the critiques of global warming\climate change by Pat Buchanan on the right and Alexander Cockburn on the left and have found much of what they say to have a lot of merit. It seems that global warming, like terrorism, is another chance for the state to gather more power unto itself (I speak of the “state” here in a generic sense, it could be the US or European governments, the UN, or other state entities) by convincing people that only the government can solve this alleged global warming apocalypse. Though, oddly enough, Osama bin Laden has taken up the cause of global warming.

Shadower, why bring race into it? Cracker is an unbelievably racist term (a bit like the n word for black people).
