The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has just announced that the terror charge against Dr Haneef has been dropped. This follows a review by DPP head Damian Bugg.
They will be holding a press conference in Canberra at 3:30pm. More to follow.
Update: The DPP says they made a mistake.
Update 2: Video of DPP press conference here and video of immigration minister conference here.
Update 3: India is asking the Australian government to reissue his visa. The Age has a lot more information including a photo of Dr Haneef leaving the prison. Premier Peter Beattie has said Haneef is welcome to return to work at the hospital if the government reinstates his visa.
Update 4: The government says Haneef is free to leave but they will not be reinstating his visa.

1) Surely someone in the AFP has to resign.
2) He should not be deported without clear justification.
As far as I can tell the only problem that this man has is that he is foreign Muslim doctor with a work visa. That shouldn’t necessarily be sufficient grounds for revoking his visa. Even in Australia.
Let the heads roll!
for sheer mendacity, I loved the DPP press conference, apparently the charges were a a mistake, like wearing a brown belt with black shoes.
Bugg should go home and update his CV, I think they are looking for a lawyer in the prosecutor’s office in Jamaica
As for the actual imbecile in his office who made the “mistake”, I think you guys here should make sure his name is never forgotten, he will be end up as the junior assistant to quality control officer for lavatory paper supplies in Burkino Faso.
Andrews’ press conference was worse, I think he used the word “advice” so many times. It is a gutless way of walking back one’s decisions. Watching his ministerial career go down the toilet will be a personal pleasure over the coming months.
The only person who has yet to be sighted is the “dermatologic atlas on legs” , our AG who has a lower profile than Haneef.
That is a good news!
justice… at last for DR HANEEF, Allahu akbar…
dr haneef should sue this government…
keelty, andrews, AFP, DPP should be investigated…
word on the muslim street is that becos of this case, muslims in this country will become less co-operative with future AFP terror investigations… why should muslims bother giving interviews and then AFP sex-up these interviews to make em sound bad??
Andrews is the kiss of death for this government, he is responsible for the IR laws and now for this farce (remember that this case had no legs and would have disappeared from the radar if Andrews had not revoked his visa and Haneef was bailed into the community).
Howard would do well for a reshuffle and hang Andrews out to dry for this one.
All we need to do is to wait and see when the great labour leader, Rudd will follow public opinion to victory.
Expect to see him at the “welcome home Haneef” party.
It’s really the DPP’s fault because the AFP would have just presented the brief to them and then they would decide whether it is worth pursuing. The AFP were really just doing their job. It would be a shame of Keelty got the flick because he’s one of the good guys and doesn’t deserve it.
Rabee says “Surely someone in the AFP has to resign”
Well one of them did drop dead. Literally.
this from the age: teflon John (no flies on him as he lays the blame on a non-core employee).

Apparently Rudd has gone into hiding until the focus group research tells which way to lead the people
Guys,
I just want to ask [got this question from someone] if the Indian government or the Indian ambassador in Australia was involved in similar case like the 22 abducted South Koreans by the Talibans? Or put this way ; has the Indian ambassador in Australia or Indian officials came with statement, whether supporting or not supporting Dr Haneef since he is Indian citizen.
Thank you
May Allah reward those who stood by Br. Haneef’s side and may Allah help us to stand for our rights of others.
Ameen (click above) !
Gess, as far as I am aware, the Indian embassy here just provided the usual consular support to Dr Haneef and didn’t make any kind of public protest or statement.
the Indian Consular or the embassy is just an agent for the Indian government in Australia, I can only act based on the direction that the government back in India tells it to. You can not really blame them for not acting, if the goc in India tells them to do nothing then they will do nothing if they want them to push full steam ahead them they will fire up the engines, but they will not act on their own accord nor will they be able to show any feelings towards any case for that matter
Been watching this one from afar. Looking at the feed from the BBC and just shaking my head. Doing a quick Google search I note that India had to beat back another lie, er, misstatement from the Howard Government. Read all about it in the Australian http://www.news.com.au/story/0.....21,00.html
This is definitely coming from the very top. You are being fed a Bu$hite talking point by your dear Mr. Howard. Repeat after me “terror, terror, terror, be very afraid, be very afraid, be very afraid, the evil MOOSILMS are out to get you, BTW vote for me. Again straight from the G.W. Shrub / Carl Rove play book. I only hope the opposition beats him like a rented mule. Cheers!
