The western way of war

Jihadists are in for a rude shock when the see the poise, the steadfastness and determination on the faces and in the voices of the young lions of the west. Indeed, the WW2 generation is not dead.

I was reminded of the battle of Salamis, Alexander’s assault on Aoronos. How can anyone stand against such courage?

Aragorn: Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you *stand, Men of the West!*

Thank God for blacks and Hispanics huh?

May Allah help the Muslims to stand up for truth and justice and may Allah protect us from cowardice.

Ameen !

Indeed. Thank Dog for over-Romantic young men whose sex-drive has been perverted into religious fanaticism.

But anyway … the ‘Western’ in the headline is plain silly. the big complaint about the Australian army is that it DOESN’T encourage non-Anglo-Celtics to join. Less so in the UK, perhaps, but non-Anglos aren’t disproportionally represented. Ditto every other ‘western’ country I can think of, except the US. The thing you’re complaining about is class, not race.

Antish,

There’s a recurring theme with your comments – they’re always the written equivalent of a childish pout.

I think you need a hug. Until then, try and be constructive with your regular “commentary”.

My childish pout is cute, though. It’s generally in response to silliness like the implicit “what the US does defines Westernism”.

Antish, childish pouts aren’t cute when they’re a fixed expression.

It’s generally in response to silliness like the implicit “what the US does defines Westernism”.

You’re right. We all know it’s actually Hollywood that defines everything Western. I mean, for me, it doesn’t get much more definitive than Die Hard and Rules of Engagement.

You should hire them out if you haven’t seen them. The courtroom scenes in the latter are a real corker.

Actually, it seems to be Hollywood that defines the Astrolabe article’s idea of ‘manly’ or ‘heroic’ or whatever it is positing against the ‘cowardly’ US white folks.

Let’s face it, the sentiments behind the article are those of a deeply macho/warrior/tribal world-view, and if we can’t sneer (or pout) at thatm things have come to a pretty pass.

Well, OK, but just remember that if the wind changes, your face will stay that way.

And what exactly is wrong with being a deeply macho warrior with a tribal world view?

The Western Way of War always involved getting foreign mercenaries or the lower classes to do the fighting for them.

Ant,

There are some of us that really want your attempt at the whole “liberal enlightenment critique” thingy to work, but you just have to do better. It appears as if your heart just is not in it anymore.

Firstly the whole “sex driven suicide bombing” thesis was blown apart after we attacked it and the author wrote an email to this web-site saying he was misquoted. To bring it up is embarrassing for you because it shows that you either do not read, or worse, do not comprehend relatively straightforward concepts.

Secondly, if you were better educated you would have come back at me with the Tillman brothers as exemplars of moral courage, but since you aren’t I have to provide the critique myself.

Thirdly calling God “dog” is hardly likely to provoke anyone here, and what’s more it reveals a lot about you since it comes from a cartoon in this week’s Spectator (page 22), and suggests that all “your” opinions are pre-digested.

Fourthly, do you really want to get into a debate about contemporary British military courage?

Now try it again, and this time with some feeling.
