When one studies or visualises a islamic manuscript or memorial, the concept of practice should be to assimilate the love, mood, inspiration of the actors-calligraphers,builders etc in those ancient times. These reminiscences makes one belief that Islam is a living ever vibrant philosophy whic has its reflective moods and faces in varying times. It also proves that beauty has many versions and beauty remains for ever.No attempt to tarnish this beauty can ever last long

My apologies about the location of Mauritania. I got it confused with Djibouti. Thanks for pointing it out, Yusuf. And it was my fault, not Amir's.

As-Salaamu 'alaikum,

Mauritania is not near the horn of Africa; it's on the west coast, between Morocco and Senegal. The horn of Africa is in Somalia, on the east coast, opposite the Yemen.

A very interesting article. All the same, it acknowledges the difficulty of disseminating knowledge without printing and I'd guess that even after that it was still more difficult to print a book in the arabic alphabet than the Latin, which would affect accessibility.

Isn't it a testimony to the fervent religiosity of the Arabs that the word "Allah" has its own special character in computer character sets? (It's Unicode character FDF2)

<i>It’s been suggested that this made muslim countries- most notably the Ottoman Empire- reluctant to accept and use the printing press so that new discoveries and knowledge were disseminated much more slowly as a result, thus widening the gaps in knowledge, philosophy and technology between the islamic world and western Europe.</i>

Actually, a recent <a href="http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/200704/keyboard.calligraphy.htm">Saudi Aramco World</a> suggests that the problem lie in creating a typeface that would do the Arabic language justice. The solution came about when a Hungarian refugee who had moved to the Ottoman Empire and reverted to Islam studied the problem from the perspective of script analysis, how the text is written, stroke by stroke.
