They are building an underground system (Metro) in Dubai and railway system to connect Dubai to Abu Duabi (I think).

Agreed, if they wish to move large amounts of goods they will need major investments in infrastructure, including rail.

It is also not feasible to only be moving goods by road, you can have 70 trucks moving goods from Dubai to Riyadh, whilst one freight train will move the same amount of goods.

Tourism? Hahaha.

Sharjah is trying to become more of an industrial hub of sorts (they recently turned to manufacturing offshore platforms).

If they want to become any sort of manufacturing centre, they need a rail system. The roads are horrible.

Abu Dhabi has near enough all the oil in the UAE so I am not surprised it has all this money sloshing around. However, they don't seem to be as excitable as the rulers of Dubai in building projects (despite some very ambitious plans).

I guess they are too small to turn the Emirates into a manufacturing hub (though they could utilize Saudi Arabia), but only investing in tourism will not be enough for a long term plan.

Some of the Gulf States are also investing in the financial sector, Dubai's Logistics City is another promising venture.

Yes, and once you been there or it's equally hell-on-Earth sister city, Dubai, you wonder why we bother to give a moment's thought to Australia's tiny carbon print on the environment.
