The Youth Talkfest 2020 was held in Canberra over the weekend and the communique is now available online. Amongst the ideas: paid-parental leave for all, compulsory climate change education in schools, nationalised broadband, more “humanitarian intervention” abroad, enforcement of mandatory study of a second language in schools, implement a London-style congestion tax. and cease all federal road funding that will result in increased car use (in areas where there is public transport).

It’s hard to accept that the Youth Talkfest condemned car use. There has been a lot of public discussion about young ‘P’ plate drivers which seems to indicate that young people are car lovers. Why would they want to see a decrease in car use? I think the talkfest released a sanitised communique.
People avoid public transport because of the pathetic infrastructure and unreliability not due to government funding of roads in areas where you can catch a bus or train.
Thats a real litany of bummer there.
