‘Razor gang’ calls for ideas

The Age reports today that the government is looking for ideas on saving money:

If anyone out there has any ideas about how the Government could cut out waste and make savings, now is your moment.

Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner is inviting ideas from the public, saying yesterday that the Government’s “razor gang” had started looking for a second round of cuts, targeting the processes and programs of government. He said there were always pressures for new spending, and “we would welcome any suggestions or savings proposals from anybody in the general community”.

I’m sure we can think of projects, departments or organisations that could safely be killed off or sold.   Post your suggestions in the comments.

How about the Oz government does a deal with (say) Toyota, whereby we guarrantee to buy 500,000 hybrids every year at a price of $10k each. The govt sells them to the populace at $12 k. We all win.

Ooops, that isn’t cutting, is it? OK - end the tax concessions for 4WD vehicles. In fact impose a higher tax on them because they don’t have to meet the safety standards of passenger cars, and thus cost our hospitals more.

1. Shut down the Australian Institute of Sport.

2. Stop funding the arts.

3. Stop funding Australian films.

May I forward this lyrical suggestion from the punk icon Jello Biafra…

Efficiency and progress is ours once more
Now that we have the Neutron bomb
It’s nice and quick and clean and gets things done
Away with excess enemy
But no less value to property
No sense in war but perfect sense at home:

The sun beams down on a brand new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
Jobless millions whisked away
At last we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight…

(Dead Kennedys, ‘Kill the Poor’)

Why is Lindsay delegating his job to the people?

They should also ask some of the muppets who trousered money under the Howard regime for things they never produced to return it.

Sell off SBS and the ABC too. There is no reason for the government to be producing TV shows and using taxpayer’s money to do it.

Cut business subsidies.

They should stop paying all the Muslim reference groups and various groups that take funding for activities that the Muslim community has never heard of.

SBS was originally established by the Fraser government to provide Australians with foreign language pornography and “arts” films that were so high brow they went full circle and became low brow. With the advent of the internet, people no longer need to turn their televisions on at 6pm every evening to watch some handlebar moustached Slovakian farm peasant pr0n and so there is no longer any need for SBS to be funded by the government.

You don’t get out much, eh, Andrew?

This is what needs to be done with those Muslims who took the money and did nothing for the community.
